Gambling in Taverns
The General Assembly has voted to allow gambling at thousands of bars and taverns across the state. Despite vigorous objections from several representatives, the House voted 53-42 to send a bill to Gov. Mitch Daniels to allow corner taverns to sell pull tabs, punch boards and tip boards, and hold “winner-take-all” raffles.

Health services grants to combat secondhand smoke in rural areas
Rural Hoosiers have been given more means to combat secondhand smoke in the workplace and receive advances in health services, thanks to grants awarded to the Indiana Rural Health Association by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Federal Communications Commission.

Why tax bills rose
Many of the problems in Marion County – and a few other places in the state – were caused by incomplete or inaccurate property assessments. Evidence indicates some assessors did an excellent job in updating – and in most cases, that means increasing – the values of homes, but they dropped the ball on commercial property. That resulted in businesses paying less than their fair share, while homeowners paid more. Elsewhere in the state, other issues were at play with last year’s bills.
